I am looking for a way to identify my mushroom photographs. I have field guides, websites but I just can’t seem to find some of them. It drives me nuts! I can only stand several hours of looking at a time.
Hi Larry
Identification can be daunting, and with so many species, no one guide can possibly have them all. Further, names are being updated all the time, and new species are discovered (or at least revealed for the first time) in Ohio and elsewhere on a regular basis these days.
It’s helpful to make detailed notes on the date, habitat, substrate the mushroom was growing on, any smells or textures or color changes that aren’t apparent in the photo, etc.
It takes time to learn good identification skills, and it really helps to confer with others. I have learned so much from OMS!
